My boyfriend and I had a great dinner here and it didn't break our already broken bank.  I had the fish and chips-- super tasty, well-seasoned with yummy fries (a mix of potato and sweet potato).  My boyfriend had the fish tacos which were pretty stellar.  As the name suggests, it's mostly fish on the menu but there's a pretty good selection as far as fry/grilled goes and everything is super fresh and seemingly sustainably farmed (I'm not sure what that means technically, but they definitely know where their fish comes from, if that concerns you).  The place is small and trendy so avoid prime times.  You can put your name and number on a list and they say they'll call you when your table is ready (although I just hovered outside for about 20 minutes so I didn't test that claim directly).  Next time I gotta try the fried pickles!

While this place isn't really vegetarian, its pescetarian (you know, vegetarians who eat fish).  It offers lots of fun fake meat and vegan alternatives but also fish and eggs/dairy.

My friends and I ate here for breakfast.  Everything was wonderful!

Its a tiny restaurant, and we had a small wait.  BUT they took our phone number.  I really appreciate a restaurant that does not force you to stand in front of the door waiting for the server/host to yell your name-although we had no where else to go.

They also have Capp St Potatoes.

As the waitress said: "Capp those hoes."
Being that I don't live in the Mission and am still clueless about most things San Francisco, she explained to us that Capp street is infamous for prostitutes.  I only wish I was cool enough to get it without an explanation...

I was so ready to love this place, I really was.

I'll be frank, guys. The vegan fish and chips - awful. I don't know how the seafood is because I came to this place strictly for the vegan fish'n'chips....butttt, it was bad. Like, really bad.

The white sangria was good, and the $17 pitcher seems about right. A couple of glasses of that, and I was on top of the world.

I ordered the Hell Fish, which is supposed to come with vegan tartar sauce. It came to me with sesame sauce....so I had to request the former. Why did it come with the wrong sauce? I don't know. I was already tipsy from the sangria.

The seitan "fish" was absolutely burnt. The fries were burnt. It was black in some spots. The seitan was super-tuff and hard to bite through. The only thing that made it good was the tartar sauce.  (You may be asking why I didn't send it back? I was tipsy and had been starving...plus I had been waiting in the restaurant for a good hour before my counterpart came...and they were just so nice about it, I didn't want to be the ungrateful patron.) In all honesty, they should have NEVER served this plate. It was absolutely ruined.

And the taste? It was nothing like fish. In fact, it was nothing. There was no flavor. It's supposed to be vegan FISH'n'chips, not "mock-fried meat and burnt potatoes."

It was a huge let-down. I had been excited about the meal all damned day.

Why two stars, then? The place is freakin' adorable. The atmosphere is super-fun, antique-y even...and I like that. I also appreciate how nice the staff was about my (extremely late) friend. I've read a lot of reviews on here about asshole staff and I failed to see that at ALL.

I know I'll try it again. Maybe I just got the worst batch they've ever made? I have to hope. The concept is so nice....

This place is great because vegans and non-vegans alike have solid options. I went with the "fish" and chips - mixing and matching Hell Fish (seitan) and Tofu. The Hell Fish was the tastier of the two, especially with the randomly Asian dipping sauce.

Apps. - The buffalo girls were good, but scared some of the non-veggies. I thought the fried pickles would have been better if they were cut in medallions instead of spears.

Overall, it's a hip, small spot that is worth trying for sure.

Yesterday I received ROTD for SF at 12.01 am, only to have it unceremoniously ripped from my squat yellow fingers at 1.00 am. Whenever this happens -- 'cause it's happened before -- my usual modus operandi is to drown myself in a sea of depression as I cling to the telephone cord connecting me to the suicide hotline and start sharpening my kitchen knives, only to make a seamless transition to unbridled anger because NO ONE PUTS BABY IN THE CORNER! NO ONE!!!!!! followed by stoic acceptance of my lot in life. Besides, the bottom line is I love being humiliated by others since feeling abused is preferable to feeling nothing at all. Really, anything that provides fodder for my self-hatred is cool with me -- I mean, shit, this engine doesn't run on fairy dust and happy thoughts, RIGHT?!? Fuck no. Everyone on yelp knows this.

Well as it turns out, my hetero life partner and dirty motherfucking ROTD thief HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?!? WHOOPSY-DAISY! Patrick M. was the worthy recipient of my loss with his eloquent Katana-ya review so I was overjoyed. And by "hetero life partner," I mean soul mate who I will never fuck because he's my identical twin and it would be like sucking myself off. Of course, had I known that HE would be the one to administer the coup de grâce I would have served his ass with divorce papers at dinner and poisoned his dishes with arsenic when we met at Weird Fish last week for some quality time.

Since Weird Fish doesn't take reservations, we figured Tuesday night would be a good time to swing by. What was pitched as a 15-30 minute wait ended up lasting an hour. But I understand that in a small restaurant like this the times are approximate and entirely dependent upon when the fucking asshole hipster loser couple with cirrhotic livers at your table decides it's FINALLY time to leave even though they paid the check 45 minutes ago. Anyway, our hostess was incredibly sweet and kept us updated on the situation which was all anyone could ask for -- no harm, no foul.

Though its name may conjure up images of Jive Ass Sushi rolls filled with mercury-laden kampachi, improperly prepared fugu, and sperm whale makizushi, I can assure you that such culinary fouls are nowhere to be found: for the most part, this is excellent greasy pub fare and pseudo-Mexican food (fish tacos, anyone?) with the added plus that MOST DISHES ARE/CAN BE PREPARED VEGETARIAN/VEGAN. That's right.

The spicy tortilla soup certainly delivered -- thankfully the vegan sour cream blunted the edge. The coconut milk -- such a simple addition -- really sweetened the Mashed Yams side plate. Fried in a dense sesame soy batter, the tofu fish and chips were the perfect combination of crunch and creaminess -- though the sweet potato 'chips' were rather burned and limp. My eight deep-fried seitan 'wings' generously covered in buffalo sauce -- otherwise known as the Buffalo "Girls" -- were tangy and absofuckinglutely divine, burning my palate in a way only a hardened masochist could appreciate. And I hope I can buy that vegannaise dip at Good Vibrations 'cause I'm gonna slather it on il tesoro's cock next time 'round -- WHAT? It's condom safe!

But perhaps this place should be called "Tricky Fish," because despite the low prices on most of the dishes, shit added up and we shelled out around $30 per person not including tax. Regardless, 4.5 stars.

$5 says this review doesn't get ROTD either.

I tried the suspicious vegetarian meal and it was delicious. There weren't a lot of vegetables for $12 but I assume they were high end organic special uber veggies.

The servers were very friendly and helpfull.

Only four stars because I had to eat something else on my way home.

Simply put: Weird Fish has delicious food, a cute (though TINY) eating area, and very friendly service.

Now, because I am long-winded, I must elaborate... As others have said, Weird Fish is a pescatarian restaurant that caters well to vegetarians & vegans. The food excludes eggs, chicken, turkey, beef, etc.--but as I recall, there is some fish on the menu, honey in one of the salad dressings, and goat cheese in a few dishes.

It was fairly late (11ish?) when I arrived with my three other dining companions, but the place was totally packed! Not to worry... We enjoyed a glass of [organic, vegan!] wine & chatted while waiting for our table. Upon sitting down, we all quickly decided what we wanted & ordered. I chose the Tofu "Fish" & Chips with Sesame Ginger Dipping Sauce. Truthfully, I felt that the actual tofu itself (inside the batter) could have been flavored a bit more, but when everything came together (and especially when slathered with the sesame ginger sauce), I was in absolute heaven. Seriously delicious! (Sidenote: I ordered the 2 piece option, instead of the 3 piece, as I had heard that the 3 piece was obscenely large... But they delivered (and charged me for) the 3 piece, anyway. I could only eat one piece because it was so filling, but the leftovers, while a bit soggy, were still good the next day.)

Everyone else got the Weird Salad and the Buffalo Girls, which are delicious seitan "wings" with a Ranch-like dipping sauce. Everything was super yummy, and dessert was no exception... The vegan Cheesecake with Strawberry-Raspberry Sauce was the first time I'd had "cheesecake" since going vegan. Smooth, creamy, and the perfect mixture of tangy & sweet--just how it should be! We also had some sort of lemon cake that was laced with a licorice (or fennel?)-type flavor, but that wasn't nearly as good as the cheezecake.

All in all, a great experience! I'd definitely go back.

Yum!  This place reminds me of an Irish pub sans the meat!  The food was delicious (albeit very fried)!  It's a small, cute place and the food caters to pesca/vegetarians/vegans.

We started our meal with beer battered okra fries with hollandaise sauce, which were to die for.  Then we proceeded to the yams (these were the best!),  tofu soft tacos with mango chutney and setan fish.  For dessert we had the chocolate chip pecan pie - again to die for.  Would definitely frequent this place to try other eclectic items off their menu!

I say damn. All you have to do is walk into Weird Fish and you'll start drooling. It smells so battered and fried.

The wait is long and the place is very small, but the space is so neat and the food is really good. We tried the catfish buffalo boys - delish. We also got the green bean app - they come with feta and almonds - also very good.

I got fish and chips and my friend got wako tacos (mashed yam, avocados and some other shit) and we shared. The wako tacos were extremely good but if I had to go with one, it would've been the tilapia fish and chips.

There were tons of vegan and vegetarian options as well, so a good place for those with marine-life phobias.

Gotta give this place some props, as it is one of the few places I have heard my buddy Jamie RAVE about.  He loved going there for dinner after I turned him on to it, and that says alot!

I have been twice and had good experiences both times.  Seating took no time at all, even for our party of 4 on a Saturday night.  Service wasn't exceptional (a little on the slow side), but the food more than made up for it.  The sides are great, even with the abundance of fried items.  There are other options and all are tasty.  I have had the "Suspicious Fish" dish twice and it hit the mark both times.  Wonderfully fresh fish paired with a perfect accompaniment of sides.  And special kudos to the veggie/vegan friendly part of the menu.  Especially the cheesecake (my guy loves that).

Good for a small group of friends or a nice dinner with the significant other.  For the price you won't find better anywhere.  As for the neighborhood, it's the Mission... and on Mission St.  So there you have it! ;-)

My new favorite brunch spot!!
There are so many delicious choices for brunch, so any decision is a fabulous one. Yes, this is not the best place to go with a large group, but you might be able to get in with 5 and not have a problem. It is a small space but not super crowded.

This place is probably my favorite weekly restaurant at the moment.  It is Vegan, veggie, pescetarian friendly, and oh oh oh so yummy.  Oh! The Yo-yos!  Oh! The buffalo girls! Oh! The white sangria!  Oh Everything!

Except one thing.  One of the wait staff, whom I shall refrain from describing, needs to get slapped out of his hipster coma and go back wait staff school. He is consistently bad at his job: He will forget you are there despite the fact that you are the only one in the whole place, he won't take your order, he has no personality, he hardly speaks.  I love all the other staff, but this one waiter took a precious star from the Weird Fish rating.  Sorry guys.

i originally had my ratings for this place at 3 starts but raised it to 4 because its just so damn cute.

its really small here and the first time i came it was a 2 hour wait so i came for lunch and it was no wait. i ordered the blackened fish which comes with cilantro jasmine rice, fried plantains and beans. i also ordered the best thing ever since sliced bread, deep fried dill pickles. it was so delicious. salty, crunchy...everything you love from a pickle with added deep fried yummyness. the entree was alright, i expected more flavor especially since that pickle was flavor country.
i would def. come here again but only when im craving pickles and have enough time to make it into the mission. i recommend eating here, its weird. that was lame, i known so cliche.

Mmmmmm...mmmm...mmmmm.  This place is very tasty.  I highly recommend the mashed yams.  They do specials that are "mysterious" each night - ie they don't describe them on the menu but if you really want to know you can grill your server.  The service is always good.  They seem to hire quirky folks who are entertaining, which I appreciate.  The desserts are always excellent as well.  The space is very small, which presumably is part of the charm.

In total this is one of those places that is great, but for some reason I don't feel compelled to eat here more often.  The price is great, the food is great ... well maybe I will start going more often now.

Came here with 6 people Saturday night and actually managed to get a table! The hostess was super friendly and helpful and the waiter was excellent as well. As far as the food, we tried out the Yo-Yos (fried pickles) and plantains and loved both. Some of the dishes were a little small in size, but the fish and chips and suspicious fish were both sizeable. I got the hell fish (seitan), and while the flavor was decent (though didn't really imitate fish enough to justify the name... get the Ginger Fish at Golden Era for that), the texture was a bit mushy and doughy; the suspicious fish my bf got was MUCH more impressive. We had great wine and the sangria was excellent. Overall, I'd definitely come back here but doubt I'd order the same entree again.

My dining experience at Weird Fish was kind of like being set up with the cute single guy who runs in your circle of friends.  You've seen him, you've heard all about him, and you like what you've seen and heard.  But, for one reason or another, the two of you haven't connected.  So there is much anticipation when your girlfriends find the perfect occasion to invite you along to a group dinner for the explicit purpose of you two getting acquainted.  They're sure you'll like him.  And you are, too.  It's way better than a blind date, because you have a basic idea what his goods are, and you have the company of your girlfriends as back-up in case things go awry.

Such was the set-up.  And I wanted to like Weird Fish - I really did.  I wanted to like it so much that I might even come back and give it another chance if persuaded.  But I just don't think it's going to work out between the two of us.

First off, the wine selection was pretty mediocre.  Anywhere else, it would be more than adequate.  But this is the Bay Area and I've become spoiled by even my sketchy little corner store being stocked like the apocalypse is coming (and the plan is to sip on vino til our hearts stop).

I was even less impressed by the food.  My rainbow trout was literally cremated, meaning it really could have been any old fish under the almond-dijon crust, which was too charred for me to appreciate the flavor of, anyway.  Too bad, because I thought the idea was genius.  And fresh trout is delightful (if you did any fishing at all growing up, you probably also know that there's this wonderful kind of childhood nostalgia you get when you have really fresh, well-prepared trout.)  The portion size was also disappointing.  I'm not a half-pound burger kind of gal by any means, but I usually expect to get somewhere between one-quarter and one-third pounds of fish when I order for dinner.  This was a sad two ounces tops - though, honestly, who knows what it looked like before it hit the fire.

The sides, alas, also sounded fantastic in concept but left much to be desired in actualization.  My sautéed spinach came out as a small soggy wad.  I wondered how long it had been sitting in the pan, congealing ever tighter into itself.  My frites were an overwhelming pile--dwarfing (trying to make up for?) my poor emaciated little fish, and the timid wad 'o greens.  They were also soggy--floppy, even.

In the end, I was very glad indeed to have the company of my girlfriends, since--like the friend set-up gone awry--that was really the only thing that kept me from filing my dining experience under "disaster."

Small place, but friendly staff.  I tried the soy battered fish and chips and while it wasn't the worst fish and chips I'd eaten, it was fried a bit too long.  The salad was good, and the tortilla soup was nothing to write home about.  The sake was very tasty however.  Overall all I don't think I'd go back, but they did try to be accomodating to my food allergy although I wonder if they were misinformed on the ingredients.  I will share this, I'm sure TMI, but nevertheless........the food gave me the worst gas ever!

Interesting time getting there...my driver asked me several times if I had the address right as he felt I was dressed a bit too nice (I was in work clothes) for the neighborhood and he really didn't want to drop me off given the high level of crime.  I told him my female friend chose it, so didn't think she would lead me to harm.  I have to say the neighborhood is not one you want to be walking around in alone as a female.

Alright SF, in just two weeks you have delivered me some pure gems.  My friend (who is veggie..i'm not) took me over to weird fish today promising something special.  He was right, shit is damn good!

Besides the cutest waitress i have ever seen in my life, the quality of the food is fantastic. Everything is very fresh.  I ordered the Fish and Chips (sweet potato fries- HELL YEAH) and they ruled.  Usually when you order all fried food you are going to feel like shat after.  I feel great...i want to run a marathon or something.  We also had the fried okra.  It ruled too.

Next stop, Weird Fish for breakfast!!!!

Pretty cool little spot in the mission. The decor and atmosphere is interesting and lively. Definitely try the ginger lemonade, it is refreshing and amazing. Your taste buds will thank you. We shared the weird salad, a tasty little salad with a really good dressing. I ordered the seitan and chips, the fries are a mix of potato and sweet potato, mmmmm. My partner ordered the tempeh and chips and I must say I prefer their tempeh to the seitan. Definitely will order that next time. Overall a really cool place with lots of options for vegetarians and seafood lovers alike.

Portions are on the smallish side, but in this time of gluttony and my pants fitting tighter, I appreciate a thoughtful small dish.

I'm sure my mission street cred will drop a little for writing this (which is unfortunate, since I have almost none to spare), but Weird Fish was kind of disappointing. The fish was a'ight, but not very exciting (not even very weird) and in such small portions. The service was weirder than the fish. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't worth the wait. Or worth the effort during the wait to NOT make eye contact with the rather intimidating 600 pound woman sitting on the bench next to the door and grumbling at passersby.

Wow! That was SO not what I was expecting...which, I dunno, I was expecting something less formal. Not to say that it's super fancy pants, but it's definitely not as casual as i was expecting.

The place was packed so the BF and I settled for sitting on the stools at the bar that looked over the restaurant. It's very small and cramped and we saw people sharing tables. That's fine but for some reason, I just imagined this place...different.

On to the food....calamari was not a great choice as an app. It was tough and rubbery. Just not the best I've ever had. The white wine sangria was too sweet and, again, not what I was expecting. It tasted like pinapple juice that had gone bad.

Fish and chips...meh. Fish tacos...meh. Sort of wish we had gone to Papalotes instead.

The service was fine, nothing to rave about but also not the worse I've ever had.

Weird Fish must be under new ownership and/or management, because this once great restaurant, has quickly gone south.

My girlfriend and I often cite(d) WF as one of our favorite restaurants in the city. The staff had always been kind, fun and helpful and the food was always great for the price.

All of this is now gone. On our latest jaunt to WF, the service could not have been worse. We sat in a half-filled room and waited 20 mins. for anyone to take our food order. And when they did, our server was incredibly rude, bordering on nasty.

When our food arrived, the buffalo fish was lukewarm and soggy. The tacos were nothing compared to what they once were and the beer was flat.

We once recommended WF to friends and colleagues on a regular basis. Unfortunately, that will never happen again. What a disappointment.

Deep-fried pickles, ya'll.  Seriously, it doesn't get any better than that.  Oh wait, yes it does.  How can I forget the delicious fried oyster sandwich and yummy spicy tortilla soup?  The oysters were fresh and crunchy paired with a soft bun and the perfect amount of seasonings.  The spicy tortilla soup had a little kick to it and plenty of flavor.

They have so many veggie options here, you can actually keep your vegetarian friends.  That's good, because how many times have you drifted apart from your veggie friends because you can't find a single goshdarn restaurant to eat at together?  Yay for Weird Fish!

Only been here for lunch, so never had to wait for a table.  As my mom would say, don't jealous me.

YUmm I want some weird fish!! I mean first of all spelling that word is so confusing where do I put the "i" anyway.. I have to say their website is amazing check it out. I also like that they try to use sustainable fish! And cater to vegetarians/pescatarians like me.. Breakfast is some good old fashioned sloppy eggs and I recommend the Mimosas (not that I would drink for breakfast ) ... try it out and check out the hood while you are there!

I like this place. the fish dishes I've had have occasionally been a wee bit too fishy for my tastes, but the apps/sides are really tasty and they outshine the entrees imo.

having just given up meat I could seriously watch a football game with a platter of buffalo girls and be happy. they're the best thing on the menu hands down (the deep fried pickles a close second). the yam puree's pretty yummy too. I've had better tortilla soup. (speaking of which - since going to Houston's I've yet to have a better tortilla soup experience in SF. nothing even comes anywhere near close. weird. isn't Houston's a chain?)

I dunno if it's the bread or not (too 'roll'-like/not baguette-y enough), but for the most part the po-boys are serviceable. the fish/chips looked really good as I eyed them as they walked by, and sadly the blackened catfish was pretty blah.

I'll go back, but mainly to satisfy my fake chicken wing cravings.

The food is not amazing, but it is definitely good.  This place is borderline over-rated because of the hype, but it is definitely over-priced.

One of the few restaurants left that will serve you good food without robbing you.  Portions are slightly small though.

Just went here last night - waited 25 min on a tuesday night!  I figured it must be good - ppl were waiting in the freezing cold.  We decided to wait it out (in the car) - because they actually take down your number and call you five minutes to seating (big plus).  The restaurant was small but it had a very lively atmosphere - great for dates and small parties.

The hostess was sweet, the wait while seated was longer than I cared for, the drink recs were awesome...

My friend and I had the white sangria and white wine - both are excellent!

Sauteed talapia - definitely a favorite here - portion small tho...
Hell fish taco - just the right amount of crispiness!
Mashed Yam - couldn't get enough of it.
Spinach - ok nothing too special...

Price - slightly pricey, but we had drinks.

I am a huge fan of weird fish BECAUSE I love love love fish but I only eat sustainably farmed fish.  They have ton's of fish to choose from and tons of great vegan options and delicious iced tea. The staff is friendly and usually give great suggestions.

I had high expectations when I walked into this place, and Weird Fish lived up to every one of them and then some. The food was great. We had the beer-battered fried okra, the Yo-yos (battered fried pickles - you must try these). The catfish and tortilla soup were excellent. The wait staff was so friendly and helpful. I would recommend this without hesitation. It is worth the wait. Next time, I'm definitely going to get the apple dumpling a la mode for dessert. OMG!!!!

I've only been here once, but I think I'm a fan of this place.  This is a place that I would definitely recommend to people who are looking for a good eat with reasonable price.  I didn't say cheap price, but definitely reasonable.
Service: The service is pretty good, people there are friendly, and food is pretty good and they have wine and beers on tap.

Note: The fried oyster are HUGE.  I picked up one of them and thought it was two stuck together.  But nooooo...each oyster is also as big as two ping pong balls...and it's fresh.
The fish and chips are pretty good.  Definitely one of the better ones I've had.  Tilapia fish I beielive.  And then I had an almond crusted covered fish.  That was pretty good too, thought it does taste very asian.
I'm sure most of the items on the menu should be pretty good. haha.  But beware, there is a line to be seated.

Small, and cramped, I thought I wasn't going to like this place. It has a charm to it. My lady friend asked me to meet her here and I did(which i made an ass of myself that night anyway) but I tried the special. It wasn't as good as I thought. Anyway i found a friend Luke was the cook there, and it was cool, small world.

Not sure could not get a seat here.......tiny and sweet.  The food smelled good.  Not enough seating for a dining space.  No place to hang out and wait for a table.  We were quoted 20 minutes.  We could sit on the bench outside empty handed?  Not good for large parties.  Good for a small gathering 2-4people.  Plan to wait and get a drink else where first:))  Can't wait to come back when there is a table open.
